Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then located multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state initial examinations show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.

A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be resolved promptly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
