Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
